Circle of Hope visit

On the morning of Saturday, November 15th, 2003, Aaron Schenker, Chris Jackson, Dominic Cirincione, Vasu Balu, Jay MacElhenny, Paul Hwang, and Tony Schueller of Lambda associate class (Joe Weiner and Brent Frederick were at work and couldn’t call out for the weekend), and Sung Gunlae of Kappa Class, drove to Pleasant View Farm/Circle of Hope Therapeutic Horseback Riding Center in Barnsville, MD to build paddocks (outdoor fences/pens). The purpose of building the paddocks was to allow the horses to stay outside, near the barn where therapeutic horseback riding lessons were given, for a longer period of time, and thus being able to benefit the disabled children longer. Between lessons, the horses would be able to wait outside in a secure structure rather than be brought to a different part of the farm.
The Push group arrived at the farm around 11:15 AM. Mr. Bazzaro, the owner of the farm, gave us a tour and our assignments. At this point there were two areas marked off for construction behind the horse barn. One section had all the logs in place, but no fence. The second area did not even have all the logs in place.
Though all of us had various tasks to complete, we all hammered in poles and outer fence pieces at some point during the day. Chris Jackson moved heavy equipment with a tractor. Aaron and Sung took turns cutting pieces of wood with a chain saw. Dominic took measurement on the wood in order to determine where bolts to hold the fence in would be placed. Dom also marked where additional logs would be added to the fence. Jay, Paul, Vasu, Chris, Dom, and Tony hammered logs together. Everyone laid fence and hammered in bolts.
At 2PM, we stopped for a lunch break. Mr. Bazzaro treated us to food from Subway. After eating we resumed our work.
The group continued working until a little after 5 PM. By that time, two out of three wraps of fencing were applied to the first area and the second area had all the wooden parts in place. The group then left for Rockville to have dinner at Tony’s house.
On Sunday morning, Tony arrived at Circle at 11AM to confer with Mr. Bazzaro as to what the day’s job entailed. He began working soon after arriving and was met by Vasu, Chris, and Aaron at 2PM (the guys left UMBC on time at 11AM but got lost coming down to Barnsville). The group worked strait through the afternoon, mainly laying outer fence and hammering in bolts, until 6:30PM. By the end of day, both paddocks were completely finished! Mr. Bazzaro thanked us profusely.
After finishing the paddocks, the guys then went to Rockville to pick up some food and supplies at Tony’s place and then drove back to campus. The Push weekend was a wonderful experience that helped others and brought Lambda class closer together. We hope to maintain close ties with Circle of Hope.

Sincerely,
Tony Schueller
